What a spring cleanup includes
Every spring visit
- Whatever came down after the last fall visit: leaves, small limbs, sweetgum balls
- Bed edges recut, which is what makes a property look kept in April
- Beds cleared of matted leaves and dead top growth
- Matted patches raked where a leaf pile sat all winter
- Damage flagged: vole runs, salt burn along the drive, standing water
Perennial cutback is priced separately. Gutters, roofs and fallen limbs are not part of a standard cleanup.

When to book spring cleanup
Our spring cleanups start on March 1, and for most lawns the best time is late March into mid-April. Iva silt loam, the most common soil in Vigo County, holds a high water table until April. Raking it while it is saturated tears the grass out by the crowns. Wait until the ground has firmed, but go before weeds start growing up through the matted beds.

We come back as the leaves drop rather than once, because a single visit is either too early or too late. We recommend two fall visits, and you can choose more or fewer.
What a fall cleanup includes
Every fall visit
- Leaves off all the lawn, back and sides as well as the front
- Leaves out of beds and ground cover, where they rot the crowns
- Leaves off the drive and walks before they stain the concrete
- Window wells and stairwells cleared
- A final mow at the right height for winter, on the last visit
- Your leaves mulched into the lawn or hauled away, whichever you choose, each at its own price. Moved to the curb instead, the estimate prices it
Perennial cutback is priced separately. Gutters, roofs and fallen limbs are not part of a standard cleanup.

Why fall takes more than one visit
- Average first fall frost, NOAA 1991–2020
- Oct 19
- When the city leaf vacuum started, 2024 and 2025
- Nov 12
- For the city to sweep every street
- 3months
Maples drop early and oaks hold their leaves into December, so a lot with both is dropping for weeks. A leaf mat left on the lawn through that stretch blocks light and air, and the grass under it comes out of winter thin and patchy. The damage happens in the weeks the leaves sit there, which is why the city's free vacuum, useful as it is, does not replace a cleanup.

What the city takes, and what it does not
- Rake leaves into the tree row, not the street. City crews blow them into the street themselves before vacuuming, so storm drains do not plug. Leaves only: limbs mixed in get left behind.
- Up to 10 bags of leaves a week go out beside your trash can on trash day for Republic Services.
- Limbs from your yard are yours. The city only collects storm damage from trees in the city tree row, reported to 311, and nothing in the alley.
- No burning. Terre Haute's code bans burning leaves inside city limits (Sec. 6-101).

Each visit is priced from a weekly mow of the same lawn, so it is priced on the grass we measure: three times it with the leaves mulched into the lawn, from $147, and five times it with the leaves hauled away, from $245. One or the other on a visit, not both.
In the spring
When the leaves are done, spring cleanup clears whatever came down after the last fall visit, takes the matted leaves and dead top growth out of the beds, and recuts the bed edges. Spring cleanups start on March 1; for most lawns the best time is late March into mid-April, once the ground has firmed.
In the fall
In the fall we come back as the leaves drop rather than once, and we recommend two visits. The city's leaf vacuum usually starts in mid-November and takes about three months to reach every street, so the leaves still have to come off the lawn and out of the beds before they mat. No burning inside city limits (Sec. 6-101).
Questions
How much does fall leaf cleanup cost in Terre Haute?
The table above shows a visit at four lot sizes, with the leaves mulched and with them hauled away. Up to 10,000 square feet of grass, which is most quarter-acre lots, a visit is $147 with the leaves mulched and $245 with them hauled away. Type your address for your figure.
Do I need a cleanup if the city picks up leaves?
Usually, yes. The city only vacuums from the tree row, so someone still has to get the leaves off the lawn, out of the beds and to the curb. And the vacuum can take until January to reach your street, while the leaves damage the grass underneath them.
Can I just mow the leaves into the lawn?
For a light fall, yes, and it feeds the soil. On a lot with several big maples the leaves pile up faster than a mower can shred them, and you end up with a mat of chopped leaves on the grass instead.
Can I burn my leaves?
Not inside Terre Haute city limits. Sec. 6-101 of the city code bans it. A small recreational fire in a fire pit is allowed under separate rules, but leaves are on that rule's banned list too.
What about black walnuts?
Rake them up rather than mowing them. The nuts can wreck a mower deck and get thrown hard, and walnut leaves and hulls carry juglone, which is toxic to many garden plants.
Will you do a one-time cleanup?
Yes, at the same price as a visit in a series: three weekly mows with the leaves mulched, five with them hauled away.
