Fertilizer and weed control timed to what the soil is doing, not to a date on a calendar, and priced on the grass we measure at your address. Indiana requires a licensed business and a certified applicator for any of it, fertilizer included. Our pesticide business licence is #278075, and our certified applicator is Zac Wallace, category 3B, Turf Management.

What the program includes

Six rounds a year, each timed to what the lawn needs then:

  1. This monthMarch or April: feed and pre-emergent. Slow-release fertilizer, and a barrier that stops crabgrass before it sprouts.
  2. This monthMay: broadleaf weeds. Dandelion, clover and the hard-to-kill ones, with a soil and micronutrient treatment.
  3. This monthMid-June: feed and grub prevention. Slow-release fertilizer and a grub preventive.
  4. This monthJuly: summer weeds. Spot treatment for crabgrass, nutsedge and whatever else the heat brings.
  5. This monthSeptember: broadleaf weeds again. Weed control, with a soil and micronutrient treatment.
  6. This monthLate fall: winterizer. A winterizer fertilizer for the spring green-up.

A four-round program leaves out the July and September rounds. It suits a yard that needs less than the full program, and commercial properties.

In every program

  • Fertilizer at the rate the season calls for
  • Broadleaf weed control in spring and fall
  • Crabgrass pre-emergent in the first round
  • Grub prevention in the June round

Not included

  • Mowing. That is separate, and cutting too short undoes a lot of weed control
  • Watering, which we cannot control
  • Weed control in beds, unless quoted
  • Tree and shrub feeding

Core aeration and overseeding are add-ons, sold separately. We do not offer soil testing.

What it costs

Lot sizeTypical priceper treatment
¼ acre$66
½ acre$73–$82
¾ acre$85–$96
1 acre$95–$108
From our current price book. Smaller lots pay the minimum. Your quote is priced on the grass we measure at your address, so a lot with a big house, drive and trees costs less than its size suggests.

Each treatment is 35% more than a weekly mow of the same lawn, so it is priced on the grass we measure: $66 on up to 10,000 square feet. A lawn that is mostly weeds needs renovating before it needs a program, and we will tell you that rather than sell you rounds.

Why timing beats the calendar

Crabgrass pre-emergent only works if it is down before the seed germinates, and the date moves. The growing-degree model Purdue recommends, run for ZIP 47802, crossed its threshold 17 days apart in consecutive years. A program that puts round one down on April 15 every year was late one of those years and early the other.

Large / hairy crabgrass (Digitaria sanguinalis)
Large crabgrass. Once it is up, a pre-emergent does nothing.

The year has four windows that matter in Vigo County:

  1. Early spring: crabgrass pre-emergent. Down before the soil warms, usually by mid-to-late March. Forsythia blooming is a sign you are nearly out of time, not a start signal.
  2. Late spring: feed and broadleaf weeds. A lighter feed. Heavy spring nitrogen grows top growth you then have to mow.
  3. Summer: spot-treat, little or no feed. Purdue's recommended summer nitrogen for an unirrigated lawn is zero. Feeding a heat-stressed lawn in July invites disease.
  4. Fall: the feed and weed control that count most. Purdue puts most of the year's nitrogen in late summer and fall, and calls mid-September to early November the best time to kill dandelions, clover and ground ivy.

In Indiana, a business applying fertilizer or weed control for hire needs a state pesticide business licence, liability insurance, and a certified applicator in category 3b, Turf Management. Fertilizer alone counts. The Office of Indiana State Chemist runs a free public applicator search. Our licence number is #278075.

Questions

How much does lawn fertilization cost in Terre Haute?

The table above shows the price per treatment at four lot sizes. Up to 10,000 square feet of grass, which is most quarter-acre lots, a treatment is $66. Type your address for the figure for your lawn, before we ask for a name or number.

When should crabgrass pre-emergent go down in Terre Haute?

Usually by mid-to-late March, before the soil warms. Purdue's research shows it can go down as early as March 1 and still last the season. After mid-July, Purdue's advice is to live with the crabgrass until frost and fix the lawn in September.

Why is fall the most important time to fertilize?

Cool-season grass builds roots and density in fall, and weeds are storing energy in their roots, so weed control travels down and kills the whole plant. Purdue: feeding late summer through autumn thickens the lawn "all without a growth surge".

Can you get rid of creeping charlie?

Yes, over two seasons rather than one. Purdue's research shows almost complete control of ground ivy by the following June from applications made mid-September to mid-October. Mowing at 3 inches or higher and cutting back shade makes it last.

Do I need grub control?

It is already in the program: the June round includes grub prevention, so there is nothing extra to buy. Purdue says fewer than 5 grubs per square foot rarely need treatment, and that seeing Japanese beetles is not a sign you will have grub damage.

How soon can kids and pets go back on the lawn?

Follow the product label, which usually means once the treated area is dry.

Is a soil test worth it?

Once, at the start, though we do not run them ourselves. If your pH is between 6.0 and 7.5, Purdue says there is no need to adjust it, which saves you from buying lime you do not need.
