The south side is Vigo County's suburban half: ZIP 47802 has the newest housing and the highest home values of any Terre Haute ZIP. It also straddles the city limit, so which grass rule applies depends on your side of the line, and it holds Allendale, the hardest lots in the county to maintain.

Most of 47802 is 1970s and later subdivisions: open grass, wide frontage, attached garages, no alley and few trees mid-lawn. That means less trim for each square foot of grass, and on our schedule a bigger lawn costs less per square foot. Allendale is the opposite, below.
Which grass rule applies to you?
Honey Creek Township holds both city ground and unincorporated county ground. The height limit is eight inches on both sides; the rest is not:
- Inside the city limits, Terre Haute's rules apply, including the duty to cut at least four times between May 1 and October 31. See the Terre Haute page.
- Outside them, Vigo County's Chapter 47 applies: five days to cure, and a flat $250 or $400 if the county mows. The full comparison is on the North Terre Haute page.
Why are Allendale lots their own category?
Allendale is "built into a bluff overlooking Honey Creek" and "known for its winding roads, heavily wooded lots, deep ravines and large houses", most of them architect-designed between the 1920s and 1960s. That changes the job:
- Slope is the job. Ravine sections cannot be mowed on a rider. They are walk-behind and hand work, much slower, which is why steep slope is a named condition on the quote rather than a surprise on the invoice. See how we quote.
- Shade changes the grass. Purdue's advice for shaded Indiana lawns is to cut half an inch to an inch higher than normal and use up to 50% less nitrogen than the same grass in full sun. A sunny-lawn program under an Allendale canopy is the wrong program.
- Leaves collect downhill. Wooded ravine lots need several leaf visits, not one. See seasonal cleanup.
- The soil is thin. The steep ground sits on Hickory soils: well drained, prone to erosion, with runoff rated "medium to very high". About 18,800 acres of Vigo County, roughly 7%, is like this.
We take on ravine and steep-slope properties. There is no fixed slope limit; how steep the lawn is can change the price, and the quote says so.
What about drainage on the flats?
Off the bluffs the south side is mostly Iva silt loam, the county's most common soil, which stays wet through winter and spring. Honey Creek drains the whole south side of the city, so a soggy low corner is water on its way to the creek. How fast it gets there decides whether a bed works or drowns; see landscape design and installation.
Which places does this cover?
The US 41 corridor and Honey Creek Township: Allendale, Southwood, Woodgate and Spring Hill. Landmarks locals will know: Union Hospital Regional on South 7th Street, William S. Rea Park, and the Terre Haute Action Track at the fairgrounds on US 41.
Questions
Am I inside the Terre Haute city limits?
In a platted subdivision off US 41, probably. On acreage further out in the township, probably not. Check your address on the county's GIS, or read the letterhead on any notice you get.
Will you mow a steep Allendale lot?
Yes. There is no slope limit, but a steep lawn is slower work, so slope can change the price. Your quote names it.
Does the county's eight-inch rule apply to a house on three acres?
Yes. The county counts anything not used for farming as residential. The field behind the house is exempt.
Why does my shaded lawn stay thin?
Most grass wants more sun than a mature canopy lets through. Cutting higher and feeding less helps; in deep shade, a bed or ground cover is often the better answer.
